Theme

The theme of the conference is Becoming Collective: Education, Community, and Life. Speakers and presentations will be chosen in accordance with this theme, and as much as possible the conference itself is being organized to encourage participation, interaction, cooperation, and a collective experience. A number of both traditional and innovative activities are planned to enable all of us to gain a deeper collective experience of the Integral Yoga. Evening entertainment will include plays, story-telling, and music.

Monte Toyon Retreat Center

The 1998 AUM will take place at Monte Toyon Retreat Center near the town of Aptos, on the California coast south of San Francisco. (You can also see a map of the center (272 K) on the Internet, and pictures of the various buildings). Monte Toyon is about an hour's drive south of San Jose, which has a major airport. The center is next to the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park and only a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Nearby in Santa Cruz is the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Daytime temperatures at Monte Toyon in August will be warm, and evenings will be cool. We have exclusive use of the center during our time.

The retreat center is laid out on gentle slopes among giant redwood trees in a deep forest setting; the grounds will be cool and inviting in late August. The AUM conference will have exclusive use of the center during the long weekend of our meeting.

Monte Toyon has a meditation chapel, an outdoor amphitheater, a volleyball court, hiking trails, a small garden, and many other facilities.

Transportation

We encourage everyone who is attending AUM 98 to use the San Jose Airport. Airlines which serve San Jose Airport are American, Southwest, Reno Air, Alaska/Horizon, America West, Continental, Delta/Skywest, Mexicana, Northwest, TWA, and United. For more information on San Jose Airport, please visit their web site

Transportation to and from the San Jose Airport will be provided. Vans will be shuttling people every few hours on Friday, Saturday, Monday afternoon and Tuesday. The cost for this is included in your registration fee. We will attempt to  accomodate people who arrive at other airports (San Francisco or Oakland) but there may be delays in transportation in this case.

Registration fee and accommodations

The registration fee covers all events, room and meals, and transportation from local airports at the beginning and the end of the conference.

Semi-private rooms are in Cary Lodge and dorm accommodations are available in Miller and Morris dorms at Monte Toyon. The rates for the conference are:

$85/day -- semi-private
$65/day -- dorm
$50/day -- single-day use
$25/day (or less) -- children 12 years and younger.

We are working to reduce the cost for children still further, and have established a "Virtual Parent" fund so that families will be able to afford to come to the conference. Please contact us if you wish to make a donation to this fund.

Rooms at Monte Toyon vary from two-person semi private to dorm rooms with ten persons per room. There are sleeping accommodations for up to 146 people at the center.

If you register for the full conference (four days) before April 15, 1998, you will receive a $25 discount on the total cost. Deposit for registration is $100. If you cancel before July 1, you will receive 100% of your deposit back; if you cancel before August 1, you will receive 50% of your deposit.

There are also motels and hotels in Aptos for those who wish to have more private accomodations, and camping is available at nearby Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and New Brighton, Seacliff, and Sunset State Beaches.

Scholarships and work exchange

If you are on a limited budget, there are a limited number of (partial) scholarships. In addition, there will be a work-exchange program whereby you can reduce your daily fee (up to $20 per day) by participating for a few hours per day in some aspect of the conference work. The amount of work available may vary from day to day, depending on the situation at the conference. Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to be involved in work exchange.

Children and families

Children and families are very welcome. The rooms at Monte Toyon can accommodate families quite well, and we are planning special activities for young children. There will be a children's room with toys, games, a puppet theater, and more. Child care will be available during the major presentations.

Presentations

Monte Toyon can accomodate up to 210 people for day use. There is still plenty of space on the AUM 98 schedule for presentations. Most will be in Helgesson Hall, which has a piano and fireplace. Smaller meetings can be held in Hollidge Hall and in the beautiful Silverthorn Chapel. We can also use the main dining room for meetings during the day.  If you are interested in giving a presentation or otherwise becoming involved in the conference, please contact us.

Contact information
