||||
a presentation by Guy Ryckaert and ShivayaA Global Project"Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony, above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realize human unity."the Mother, founder of Auroville,1965.
At the inauguration ceremony of Auroville on 28th February 1968, youth representing 121 countries and 23 Indian States placed a handful of earth in a lotus-shaped urn, symbolizing the creation of a city dedicated to human unity, international understanding and a hopeful future for humanity. A new city was born, dedicated to peace and a hopeful future for humanity, a "site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity." (from the Auroville Charter) Today, Auroville is an expanding community of about 1,500 people from India and more than 30 other countries around the world.
A Laboratory for a Sustainable Planet
Auroville's pioneering efforts are many, including wasteland reclamation; soil and water conservation; reforestation; producing food without pesticides; reintroducing sustainable agriculture; solar electric, wind pump, passive solar and biogas technologies, training, consulting, design, supervision, and construction of cost effective building technologies; benefiting local villagers with copperation in sustainable agriculture, health care, community development, education and sports programs.
A vision of hope for India and the WorldAuroville's future has to be secured. At present, Auroville's development according to its original plans is being threatened by rapidly escalating land prices, and increasing real estate speculation on the Auroville plateau. Purchase of the remaining land is urgently needed to allow for coherent development of the city and its infrastructure to create, together with the local population, a sustainable bioregion in harmony with the Earth.
